Company resubmits turbine proposal

Plans for a wind turbine near Aspatria have been resurrected after they were initially rejected.

The 62m turbine at Brayton Mill was originally rejected by Allerdale Council’s development panel in November 2010, but the plans have been resubmitted.

The decision was successfully appealed in July 2011 and now looks set to go ahead.

Renewable energy company DistGen wants to build the turbine at JPA Agriculture Ltd to replace the need for diesel generators to supply electricity.

A design and access document submitted to Allerdale council says: “This scale of turbine has a significantly smaller impact in both visual and environmental terms being only half the physical height of today’s large scale turbines and this helps to nullify many of the criteria used…to assess the impact levels of today’s turbines.

“The proposed development fits closely to the aims and objectives of national policy and the benefits appeal well established.

“The application hopes the proposal will meet with support from the officers.”

The original submission was refused after the owner of Brayton Park Golf Course said he wanted to build chalets on the course.

There were also concerns about the impact the turbine would have on tourism, television signals and nearby horses.

Consultation on the proposal ends on January 27.
