Bay View wind turbines proposed

MILWAUKEE – Will they be an eyesore on the lakefront? Big wind turbines could be going up in Bay View.

The wind turbines will be visible from as far away as Veterans Park.

“I am not here to sell this wind turbine to you as the answer to all of our energy problems,” said Matt Howard, the city’s energy sustainability director.

He believes wind turbines near the Port Authority property could help reduce energy cost at city owned buildings. The city calls it a win win investment.

“That in the long run will burn clean, renewable energy.”

Nearly 150 people packed the South Shore Park Pavilion to get a closer look.

Dick Strassman is a fourth generation Bay View resident. He has concerns about wind noise. “Maybe you can withstand a police siren but this thing is 24 hours there is no sleep.”

Others see opportunity.

Mary Guardalabene has lived in the neighborhood 20 years.

“I think its about time that we consider other resources that fossil fuels and nuclear. It’s free. It’s beautiful and I dont oppose it at all.”

Is it a done deal?

“Not yet,” said Milwaukee Alderman Tony Zielinski. “I want to afford my constituents the opportunity to give me input and feedback.”

More public hearings are expected to happen later on in the decision-making process.
