Truro looks into wind turbine project

The Chronicle Herald, thechronicleherald.ca 12 January 2012

Truro is interested in harnessing the wind.

The town issued a request for proposals Wednesday for a wind turbine development. Jan. 25 is the deadline for applying.

Chief administrative officer Jim Langille said Thursday staff will evaluate the responses and report back to council, likely in February.

The town is interested in installing one 50-megawatt turbine next to its water treatment plant, he said.

The project, which would cost roughly $1 million, could be included in the town’s spring budget, Langille said.

“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to put something in that budget to reflect the construction and installation of a turbine through the summer months.”

If the project is approved, the town would apply to the Energy Department to be part of the province’s community feed-in tariff program.

Other municipalities across the province have proposed projects to produce renewable electricity for Nova Scotia Power.
