Derby wind developers to answer questions tonight

The developer of two industrial wind turbines proposed for Derby will answer questions tonight at the Derby Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

Board Chairman Brian Smith said the meeting is an opportunity for community members to talk to Chad Farrell of Encore Redevelopment.

The select board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the town office meeting room. The Derby wind project discussion is set for 7:30 p.m.

“We just want to continue to reach out to the community,” Farrell said Thursday.

The developers want to explain the application that has been filed with the Vermont Public Service Board for the wind project and what is in the large volume of documents that are on file with local town and village offices.

“We want to give an update on the schedule and to hear any questions,” Farrell said.

The meeting was set up this week after Farrell and a partner met privately at noon Monday with Smith, Derby Line Trustee Keith Beadle, Derby Line Clerk Karen Jenne, who is also a Derby selectmen, and others.

The main goal of that informal gathering, Farrell said, was to find out what questions need to be answered at the upcoming meeting.

Farrell said he plans to meet with the Holland Board of Selectmen Jan. 16.

Encore Redevelopment has applied for two certificates of public good for the two turbines from state regulators on the Public Service Board.

The turbines, estimated to be 427 feet tall or less, are proposed for the Grand View Farm to the east of Interstate 91, owned by the Davis family, and the Smugglers Hill Farm, owned by the Chase family.

The Public Service Board has yet to assign a docket number to the application or ask for applications from those interested in being a party to hearings, Farrell said.

Smith said Monday’s Derby selectmen meeting would give area residents a chance to ask questions outside the formal state hearing process.
