Woman opposed to Saskatoon turbine claims victory

Reported by Stephanie Froese, www.newstalk650.com 7 January 2012

Saskatoon Light and Power is no longer recommending a wind turbine project at the city’s landfill due to financial reasons.

Barb Biddle is considering it a big win. She’s the president of the Montgomery Community Association but she is also part of group in the city that was very much against the wind turbine.

She says the turbine would have had a negative impact on health, taxes and the environment.

“We made sure that we could share that information with the counsellors so that they could have the best information available when they were looking at that issue. I think that a lot of the counsellors were hearing it,” she said.

Atchison admits wind power is not as affordable as some might think.

“There is a lot of other ways of dealing with the environment and we need to make sure we have reliable power source all the time. That’s through a lot of different energy sources other than wind which is not reliable by any stretch of the imagination,” he said.

He stands by the process they took while looking at the wind turbine option.

Still, Biddle says she was disappointed in the lack of public engagement and information put out during the whole process.

The next step is recommendation against the proposal goes to city council.
