Wind mast at Workington factory is approved

Planning permission has been granted for a 262ft meteorological mast to be erected in a field next to the Iggesund Paperboard plant at Siddick.

The paper mill has decided to erect the mast to gather information on wind conditions with a view to erecting wind turbines to reduce its carbon footprint.

The mast will be installed in a field to the east of the mill and is coloured to blend in with the sky.

The mast will stay up for 18 months and will be taken down at the end of the period.

Seaton Parish Council raised concerns about the impact on visibility.

The permission comes a month after protestors fought against a 303ft wind turbine planned next to nearby Eastman chemicals.

However, protestors say they are less worried about the possibility of turbines at Iggesund.

Jason Lowden, 40, of St Helens Farm, said: “We know we have got to have them but the one at Eastman would have caused shadow flicker which is why I got involved in that battle.

“I am sure there will be a lot of other people against ones at Iggesund but you have got to fight your own battles.”
