Nearly 350 wind turbines set for the Stewartry

The Stewartry could be covered in hundreds of wind turbines if developers get their way.

The News can reveal that there would be nearly 350 turbines populating the region’s landscape if every one in the council’s planning system was approved and every proposed windfarm development went ahead.

Most people agree that there is an increasing need to turn to renewable energy due to increasing pressures on coal, oil and gas.

What form those schemes takes is a matter of debate with solar, tidal and hydro some of the options.

But wind power seems to be the option most favoured by energy firms when it comes to Dumfries and Galloway.

And that has proven to be a controversial subject.

Some communities enjoy the financial benefits they receive from windfarm developers while others are concerned about the impact they have on the environment.

Today the News takes a look at the issue with details of just how many turbines are proposed for the region, as well as hearing from people on both sides of the debate
