Disruptions coming as work starts on wind turbine in Bayonne

Numerous road closures and detours are planned in Bayonne starting today as construction begins on the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority’s wind-turbine project.

City officials say the road closures are necessary to accommodate the massive pieces of the turbine, which are being delivered to the Bayonne Municipal Authority’s Oak Street Pumping station.

“Police officers will be around enforcing various closures, detours and other traffic restrictions on an as needed basis,” city spokesman Joe Ryan said.

The turbine, comprising a roughly 260-foot tower and 1.5-megawatt center piece, is expected to save the Authority $7 million over the next 20 years, the Journal has reported.

“Most of the power generated will be used on site,” Ryan said. “It’ll be used mostly for the electric needs of that utility site.”

Bayonne also stands to benefit from the addition, saving in electricity costs and also earning Renewable Energy Credits with PSE&G, city officials have said.

The turbine will produce 3.3 giga-watt hours of electricity a year enough to power up to 600 single-family homes per year.

Construction on the project, which has faced several construction hurdles in the past, is slated to begin next week, with the turbine expected to become fully operational in March, Ryan said.
