Horham wind turbine fight hots up as the MOD says no

A farmer’s bid to site two wind turbines on a historic north Suffolk airfield has been met with widespread disapproval.

Both the Ministry of Defence and Horham Parish Council have recommended Brian Cooper’s application to place the two 36.4-metre high turbines at Lodge Farm in The Street for refusal.

The former says it is because the turbines will affect their radar system at nearby RAF Wattisham.

And the latter, who held a planning meeting in public two weeks ago to discuss the bid and had about 60 people turn up because the issue was up for debate, has listed ten reasons why they oppose the application to Mid Suffolk District Council.

Some of these reasons include that the turbines will be detrimental to historical features in the landscape because the farm is on the site of the old American 95th bomb group, noise and visual intrusiveness issues, and the fact that the installation will bring no benefit to Horham, with Mr Cooper and his family allegedly no longer even living at the farm, which the council believes has an unused grain store and no animals.

Mr Cooper has stated that the turbines would “generate electricity to help offset the usage of the farm”, but the parish council argues the 50kw turbines would merely make a massive oversupply of electricity, and would be there purely for profit.

The district council’s target determination date for the application is January 23, 2012.
