Opposition mounts against Darwen wind turbine bid

The leader of Blackburn with Darwen Liberal Democrats has backed a campaign to stop a huge wind turbine being erected at Cranberry Moor in Darwen.

The owners of Pleasant View Farm, in Darwen, have applied to erect an 88.5-metre high wind turbine, which would be taller than the chimney at the town’s India Mill.

And the plans have provoked an angry reaction from people living in the Cranberry area.

Coun David Foster, who represents the Whitehall ward and lives close to where the turbine would be situated, said he was opposing the plans.

He said: “It will affect a lot of people in Whitehall as it will have a huge visual impact.

“These things need to be sited more carefully to minimise the visual effect they have.”

A public meeting has been planned at Whitehall Country Club next Tuesday for all those with concerns to air their views.

The meeting starts at 8pm.

Darwen Town Council mayor Paul Browne, who sits on the borough council’s planning committee, said: “I will make my mind up when I see the evidence presented to the highways and planning committee.”

The campaign is being led by Cranberry Fold Court resident Martin Vizzard, who said his home would only be 365 metres from the new turbine.

Marsh House councillors Philip Jones and Frank Connor also said they were against the plans.
