Windwise launches petition drive to force special Town Meeting One article would stop construction of wind turbines

FAIRHAVEN – Windwise has started a petition drive calling for a special Town Meeting to vote on three proposed articles, including one that would immediately stop and suspend the construction of two wind turbines on town land off Arsene Street.

The other bylaws would create term limits for public officials and provide more time to return petitions seeking recalls.

The turbine article also calls on the town to “suspend any contracts” for the wind turbine construction and return the land to its prior state.

The term limit article would start with the town election of April 2012. It would limit elected officials to serving a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Any elected official who has already served a maximum of six years in any particular office at the time the bylaw is enacted would be prohibited from serving in the same position after his or her term expired.

The recall article increases the number of days for returning a recall petition from 14 to 30.

Windwise is a local group that opposes the construction of the two wind turbines.
