Province has the power

Orangeville Banner, www.orangeville.com 28 December 2011

The Banner recently published a letter from the executive director of the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (Municipalities still have power, Dec. 13) an association that has the following vision: “To act as the leading voice, advisor and facilitator for the renewable energy sector in Ontario and to provide an unparalleled network to promote and enable the growth of community and commercial energy in the province.”

Now that we know their mandate, it is understandable that this association would write a letter to the press that clearly muddies the political waters and tries to falsely suggest that municipalities have the power over wind turbine developments.

Our meetings with the Minister of the Environment have proven to be a waste of time since wind farm development continues to be proposed with insufficient and incomplete information being provided to the public and the municipality, yet a final public meeting has been held, and a 60 day review period has commenced.

The Minister of the Environment has made it very clear they are the decision-makers under the Green Energy and Economy Act. Clearly, the municipality is not the decision-making authority.

Don MacIver,

mayor of Amaranth Township
