Momentum builds against Madaket wind turbine

By Jason Graziadei, I&M Senior Writer, The Inquirer and Mirror, www.ack.net 22 December 2011

The group that has coalesced to oppose the town’s plan to build a 900 kilowatt wind turbine at the Madaket landfill calls itself Common Sense Nantucket, and in just a few short weeks, it’s made a splash.

Just days ahead of the Board of Selectmen’s vote on whether to put the turbine proposal on the 2012 Annual Town Meeting warrant with what is expected to be a $3.4 million appropriation to fund the construction, Common Sense Nantucket has cast doubt upon two year’s worth of work by the Nantucket Energy Study Committee and the town’s Energy Office on the turbine project.

Correction: The print version of this story inaccurately described one of Common Sense Nantucket’s founders, Jim Aylward, as a seasonal resident, and thus ineligible to vote. Aylward is registered voter on Nantucket.
