Group urges city to rexamine wind turbine project

CTV Saskatoon, saskatoon.ctv.ca 20 December 2011

A group of Saskatoon residents urged city councillors to put the brakes on a controversial wind turbine project when they appeared before council Monday night.

The city is moving ahead with a request for proposals to build the project at the city’s landfill, but residents of the nearby Montgomery neighbourhood say it would create noise, and decrease property values. They also argue the project will have environmental and health effects.

The Saskatoon Wind Turbine Coalition presented a petition with more than 1,000 signatures to council on Monday night, asking the city to do more research before going ahead with the project.

City officials say the turbine will be built far enough away from homes that it won’t pose health risks, and that it will be economically viable.

Saskatoon Light and Power is evaluating bids made through the request for proposal process, and will provide results in January.
