Bowers Wind Project Still Alive Despite Earlier Denial Vote

On December 7th, one day before the expiration of the time allowed in which to make a permitting decision under the so-called “expedited wind permitting law,” LURC voted to table First Wind’s request to withdraw their “Bowers” application. In a stunning decision, LURC agreed to give the developer an additional 90 days to draft a “written description of its plans for reconfiguring the Bowers Wind Project to address the concerns expressed by the Commission.”

FMM disagrees with the LURC Commissioners’ actions, even while understanding them. The Commission faces pressure from several directions-the LURC Reform Committee, the powerful wind lobby, and members of the Legislature and the public.

But FMM knows that scenic impact cannot be mitigated, and that the Downeast Lakes region is one of Maine’s precious and priceless jewels.

We hope that LURC will stand by their carefully considered decision to deny First Wind’s Bowers permit. When more than 90% of the public comments are in opposition to a project, and those few comments which are in favor are submitted by people who stand to benefit financially, it’s a good indication of the appropriateness of a project. We support the Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed (PPDLW) as well as the many sporting camp owners, licensed Maine Guides, and local property owners who oppose the Bowers project. FMM anticipates a deny decision at the conclusion of this 2 ½ year long process. There can be no other outcome.
