Proposed wind farm threat to wildlife

www.reflector.com 12 December 2011

There are few spectacles more memorable than the Snow Geese, Tundra Swans, ducks (of many species) and American Coots at lakes Mattamuskeet and Pungo in December and January. While we can see more Bald Eagles at the local catfish ponds, the eagles are also a treat to see. I regretted to read of the latest threat to this wonder: a Pantego wind farm proposal. We should all fight this danger and join the national and Audubon Society of North Carolina.

The causeway at Mattamuskeet and the observation platforms make the view accessible to nearly everyone. There are even restrooms with running water at the Mattamuskeet Visitor Center now.

I would like to add my thanks to Grace Smith and Howard Vainright for organizing van trips that convinced me that no winter should be passed without a trip to the Pocosin Lakes.

I look forward to suggestions from the groups who opposed the Outlying Landing Field about the most effective actions to take against this new threat.
