Plans for wind turbine near Carlisle dropped

Proposals for an 80ft-high wind turbine at Scaleby, north east of Carlisle, have been dropped in a spirit of good neighbourliness.

Ian Lancaster – a farmer, accountant and director of H&H Group – applied for planning permission for a turbine behind Stoneknowe House. The scheme was withdrawn this week after villagers expressed opposition at a parish meeting.

Mr Lancaster, of Kirklinton, said: “I wasn’t entirely convinced of the economic arguments and I am simply being a good neighbour. I didn’t want to cause any ill feeling.”

The council had received three written objections, one from Penrith and the Border MP Rory Stewart.

Mark Callingham, of The Barn, Stoneknowe, argued that a turbine would “seriously damage” the landscape and impact on nearby Hadrian’s Wall and Grade I-listed Scaleby Castle.

Mr Lancaster’s planning application, prepared by Neil Henderson of H&H Bowe, said the turbine would be 150 yards from the nearest residential property.

The site had been chosen “as a compromise between optimum wind conditions….and the intention to minimise its impact on local residents”.
