Devon anti-wind farm groups join forces

BBC News, www.bbc.co.uk 9 December 2011

Two campaign groups in Devon have joined forces to fight plans for a wind farm the size of the Isle of Wight planned for off the north coast.

If built, the Atlantic Array offshore wind farm would have more than 400 turbines.

The groups Slay the Array and Atlantic Disarray said it could damage tourism, fishing and the environment.

Developer RWE npower renewables said research showed the impact on tourism of such farms was negligible.

The company wants to build the facility about 10 miles (16km) off south Wales and nearly nine miles (14km) off north Devon and have it up and running by 2016.

It said the planned 417 turbines could power up to 1.1m households.

A public consultation into the project closed on 10 November.
