The Charlotte Planning Commission is reviewing a proposal to build 345 solar panels in a field off Hinesburg Road and Spear Street. The panels will be 4 feet off the ground on the bottom and 10 feet high in the air. They will cover about 50 acres of land.
Last week, in the face of rich subsidies and friendly court rulings in favor of Lowell’s GMP wind farm, we predicted that Vermont will become carpeted with ridgeline wind towers and ground-level solar panels if the brakes aren’t put on the rush to so-called “green” alternate power sources.
Only three things associated with these projects are thus far certain: 1) They are hugely expensive to the utility users and taxpayers; 2) They are notoriously inefficient and unreliable and; 3) They are really ugly.
The protesters in Lowell – and previously in Sheffield – aren’t protesting because they object to the price or reliability of green power towers and solar panels, but because they believe them to be environmental and aesthetic blights. We’ve seen the degradation of land in other places where wind towers and solar panels have proliferated and it sure ain’t pretty.
As long as Obama and Shumlin keep sacrificing big money on the altar of green energy, we’ll see power companies cashing in and our beloved landscapes pimped out.
