Wind farm go-ahead

The Examiner, www.examiner.com.au 6 December 2011

Work will begin later this month on the $400 million Musselroe wind farm in the state’s North-East.

Premier Lara Giddings this morning announced that work is set to begin on the 168 megawatt wind farm, which will create more than 200 jobs during the 18-months construction phase.

“This is a significant project that will deliver jobs for Tasmanians, opportunities for local businesses and a real confidence boost for the North-East,” Ms Giddings said.

“The Musselroe wind farm will continue to build Tasmania’s reputation as a world leader in renewable energy development.”

It is expected that the foundations for the 56 wind turbines, which will be supplied and installed by Danish company Vestas, will be poured in the first half of next year.

Launceston company Haywards will build the tower sections of the turbines.

Stage one of the project involves the construction of a 50-kilometre transmission line connecting the Cape Portland development with the network at Derby.
