CAW faces protest over turbine

The Windsor Star, www.windsorstar.com 30 November 2011

Port Elgin residents plan to rally Saturday to voice their opposition to a wind turbine the CAW plans to build on its conference centre property.

“We’ve got a situation here with a community of residents, as well as all their elected representatives, who are all entirely disagreeing with the proposed turbine,” said Karen Hunter, a member of anti-turbine residents’ group Saugeen Shores Turbine Operation Policy. “Essentially, they have exhausted every source of opposing the turbine. It seems everywhere they turn, there just doesn’t seem to be anyone, in government particularly, who is listening.”

Workers have started cutting trees around the proposed site of the 76-metre tall turbine near the Family Education Centre and residents expect construction to start any day.

Hunter said she’s expecting hundreds of residents to attend Saturday’s rally, which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and proceed from the Town of Saugeen Shores’ main street to the centre.
