New wind farm planned for Central Highlands

Credit:  ABC News, www.abc.net.au 28 November 2011 ~~

Tasmania’s Environment Protection Authority has conditionally approved a 100 turbine wind farm in the state’s Central Highlands.

American company NP Power wants to build the wind farm on the eastern shore of Lake Echo.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has considered the potential impacts on Wedge Tailed Eagles and the benefits of the project.

The acting chair of the EPA, Ian Abernathy, says potential eagle deaths have to be comprehensively studied before construction can start.

“The whole farm will not proceed unless we are completely satisfied that the impact is in fact sustainable on the population of wedge tailed eagle,” he said.

If too many eagles are killed the EPA can shut the turbines down.

The project has now been referred to the Central Highlands Council.

The wind farm then has to be approved by the Federal Government.
