Newport seeks wind turbine moratorium

Associated Press, www.boston.com 25 November 2011

NEWPORT, R.I.—The city of Newport is seeking a moratorium on wind turbines.

The Newport Daily News reports Mayor Steven Waluk made the proposal after a city resident sought a permit to erect a 30- to 40-foot wind turbine his in yard.

John McNulty already has four small wind turbines on his roof.

He negotiated to remove the small turbines in exchange for getting a permit to put up a commercial tower, but the city backed out on the deal.

Waluk says the city does not oppose renewable energy or wind turbines. He says residents are concerned about large turbines going up in their neighborhoods. Waluk says the city needs to amend its zoning code to address those issues.
