Polegate town authority ‘vehemently’ opposes wind farm

A wind farm development involving five turbines has been ‘vehemently’ opposed by a town authority.

Regeneco wants to erect five wind turbines on land off Shepham Lane, north of the A27 near Polegate.

The Sussex Express has reported a mixed reaction from some residents about the plans.

But Polegate Town Council has put in an official objection against the proposal following a public meeting on November 1.

In a letter to Kelvin Williams, Wealden head of planning, Polegate Town Council said it ‘resolved to vehemently oppose the application’.

The letter added: “The decision was unanimous and both public and councillors present at the meeting were all opposed.”

Objections raised by residents who spoke at the meeting included: wildlife concerns, noise from the turbines, the closeness to residents’ homes, and the visual aspect of the turbines.

Cllrs Gerald Carter, Tim and Jill Voyce commented officially with Cllr Jill Voyce saying the consultees listed by the district council, including nine town or parish councils, ‘demonstrates just how far reaching the impact of this proposal will be’.

She added: “This application is unusual in the extreme. It is impossible to consider its suitability strictly within the usual planning criteria.”

Concerns were given by the councillors about the visual impact and the ‘subjective opinion of [Regeneco] that the five proposed wind turbines will not cause significant harm’.

Comments on the plans can be sent to Wealden District Council until November 29.
