Pattern abandons Yolo County wind power project for environmental reasons

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ – Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern) today announced its intention to abandon development of its Yolo County wind project due to the potential for impact on sensitive local bird species, including golden eagles and bald eagles. The 100 megawatt (MW) Yolo County project, located near Sacramento, was in mid-stage development and had not yet entered construction.

“This would have been a strong source of wind power for California, which needs more renewable energy, but the right thing to do is abandon this project,” said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Energy. “Pattern is committed to environmentally-responsible wind development and our view is that the risk to sensitive species at this project site outweighs the project benefits. This is partly because the mitigation efforts available do not meet our high standards and requirements.”

“We’re proud of our track record as a leader in environmental stewardship. Our team of scientists has led the development and implementation of advanced technologies to protect wildlife, including an innovative radar system to monitor and protect birds and bats,” noted Garland.

Pattern currently has 520 MW of wind power projects in operation. The company expects to bring 1,000 MW of wind projects into construction over the next 12 months.
