Community board opposes wind farm

Bluff Community Board members agreed at a board meeting last night to send a submission to the Invercargill City Council opposing the Flat Hill wind farm proposal.

The board opposed the proposal for a variety of reasons, including the possibility of turbines being in the flight path of titi (mutton birds) and visual pollution.

It considered the wind farm a danger to motorists because of shadow lines being too close to State Highway 1 along with the reflection of the setting sun on turbine blades.

The board also felt the wind farm was culturally offensive because it would be close to the Green Point Cemetery, where people should expect quiet.

“To approve this application opens the door for the wind farm to expand, with little or no regard to the wishes of Bluff residents,” the submission says.
