New councillor against wind turbines

Report by Michael Coombes, Isle of Wight Radio, www.iwradio.co.uk 21 November 2011

People against Wind Turbines in the West Wight have received the backing of new councillor Stuart Hutchinson.

The Conservative won a landslide victory on Thursday last week.

Speaking for the first time since being elected Mr Hutchinson told Isle of Wight Radio that plans for a mini wind farm near Wellow are wrong.

He said many people who voted for him had made their views quite clear. “They’re not happy to see these huge machines in the fields of the West Wight and be seen from the whole of the rest of the Island. Generally they are opposed to them and that’s my view too. I think it’s the wrong development in the wrong place.”

However Mr Hutchinson was keen to point out he’s not against renewable energy and does support alternatives. “In the West Wight there have been three recent applications for solar parks, each of them five megawatts, and together they would produce more power than this wind farm by far. Each one was approved without almost any opposition so clearly local people are very happy with renewable energy but they want to see the right sort.”

Mr Hutchinson also said he wants to try and stop Wightlink’s plans to reduce its night time ferry service from Yarmouth to Lymington and he also wants to see a more frequent bus service for the West Wight.
