The Freedom Planning Board recently held two workshops at the town office. The purpose of both workshops was to hear advice from other sources regarding the best way to approach writing a new wind ordinance for the town. Presenters included Lissa Widdof of Freedom who just completed a three year term as a member of the Maine Board of Environmental Protection which just completed an exhaustive study of wind turbine noise, Tom Olds of Jackson who was a member of the sub-committee and who did much of the research for the Jackson Wind Ordinance, Randall Fairman, a member of the Dixmont planning board and the primary research analyst for their ordinance, Ana Antaki who was the lead researcher for Montville’s wind ordinance, John Piotti of Unity who is chair of both the Unity Planning Board and Comprehensive Planning Committee, and who also did much of the work on the Unity’s wind ordinance, Steve Ambrose of Windham and Robert Rand of Brunswick who have been noise consultants for more three decades and have worked with towns on all sorts of commercial and industrial development with regard to noise issues all over the United States and Canada, and finally Stuart Cohen of Dixmont who is chair of that town’s planning board and who has been a practicing attorney for thirty five years. Members of the planning board attending were chair, Bill Pickford, Gunnar Wood, Prentice Grassi, Kevin Malady and Drew Fales.

At the next workshop on December 6, anyone who wishes to speak with regard to the impacts of living near wind turbines will have an opportunity to address the planning board. The meeting starts at 6:30 at the Town Office.
