CAW wind protest planned

Residents in Saugeen Shores are putting more pressure on the Canadian Auto Workers union over a proposed wind turbine.

Bayshore Broadcasting News has learned about 30 people are planning to block the CAW Road in the south end of Port Elgin at 8 AM on Friday.

That is when cement trucks are scheduled to arrive at the CAW Family Education Centre to start prep work on a wind turbine.

Dozens of residents have complained about the project – and the fact its only 150 metres from private homes.

Provincial regulations require a 550 metre setback – but the Certificate of Approval was granted prior to the proclamation on September 24th, 2009.

It means the union doesn’t have to adhere to the 550 meter noise setback.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith admits the site is not a proper place for a wind turbine.

Council is asking the Ministry of Environment to review and perhaps suspend or revoke the Certificate of Approval.

Vice-Deputy Mayor Doug Gowanlock hopes CAW officials will re-consider their plan, in light of the public concern on setbacks and health issues.
