Huron-Bruce MPP taking on Armow wind power issues

By TROY PATTERSON KINCARDINE NEWS, www.kincardinenews.com 15 November 2011

Newly sworn-in Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson said the first order of business for her Progressive Conservative caucus returns to work next week, will be taking a request for revisions to the Green Energy Act (GEA) to the ruling minority Ontario Liberal Party.

In light of the response to the doubling in the size of the Samsung-Pattern Armow Wind Power Project in the Municipality of Kincardine, Thompson said she plans to converse with both the companies and community stakeholders in an attempt to “hit the pause button” on wind projects until health studies on wind power projects have been conducted and considered.

“This is a clear sign we need to bring local autonomy back to the community,” said Thompson during a phone call with The Kincardine News Monday morning. “We need a business plan that considers all players and keeps moving forward with third-party studies. Rural Ontario has lost its voice at Queen’s Park and it needs to be brought back to the table.”

With the Ontario Throne Speech set for Nov. 21, Thompson said the first day back at Queen’s Park will be see a “very busy chamber” with a lot of work to be done by her party. She said the PC caucus is “staying the course” on its election platform, which will request the province revise the GEA to include the say for municipal governments in wind power decision-making, as well as a request for a moratorium on wind project development, pending the release of third-party studies on perceived health issues involving turbines.

“In light of the statements coming forward, we’re going to ask Samsung to respect the need to involve community stakeholders,” she said. “Respect needs to be demonstrated.”

Now the Deputy Energy Critic for Ontario, Thompson said she has requested PC Energy Critic Vic Fedeli visit the area on Dec. 13 to speak with local stakeholders regarding wind power issues, to learn more about the issues facing the community.
