Fairhaven officials defend wind turbine construction

Crews recently began clearing land in Fairhaven for a wind turbine project, but residents say they were never notified that construction would begin.

The site, located off of Arsene Street in Fairhaven, will be the new home of two 80 meter wind turbines. The proposal was met with resistance when it was introduced over 3 years ago. Opponents first tried to fight it in court, but the case was dismissed.

“It was dismissed, but we have certain rights if they start the project again,” Ken Pottel, an opponent said. “And we will exercise them.”

Pottel says the construction came as a shock because the town never notified him or anyone involved in the case.

But Jim Osuch, Fairhaven’s Executive Secretary, says legally they don’t have to inform anyone, but there was a meeting on the matter.

“Three years ago the town heard the pros and the cons and they voted to move forward with the project,” Osuch said. “The issues, I believe, have been addressed.”

But Pottel and other members of WindWise, a group opposed to the project say they will fight the project even as it goes up. The group does have a lawyer and plans to file a motion in court in the coming weeks.
