Victory for protesters over wind farm plan

Controversial plans for a £12m wind farm in North Yorkshire were rejected last night.

Selby Council’s planning committee rejected plans for the scheme, which would have seen five 417ft turbines built in the village of Cliffe, near Selby.

Council officers had recommended the development at Cleek Hall, in Turnham Lane, be approved in line with its renewable energy benefits – a move which had outraged residents who campaigned against it.

The planning committee’s chairman, James Deans, said the plans were overturned because the turbines would have an “unacceptable” visual impact on the surrounding countryside.

The application was also rejected because of the scale, height and proximity to neighbouring houses and communities in Barlow and Cliffe.

Three parish councils had objected to the proposals and the Barlow Wind Farm Action Group handed in a 201-signature protest petition to Selby Council.

The authority also received 140 letters of opposition from residents. Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster, and the Burn Gliding Club also raised objections.

The Conservative MP for Selby and Ainsty, Nigel Adams had said it would be a disaster if the wind farm was given approval.
