Not a maniac

The Orleans Record, orleanscountyrecord.com 10 November 2011

In your editorial of Nov. 7th regarding Gov. Shumlin’s opposition to Vt. Yankee and support for industrial wind, you state that “no one knows why he has taken this maniacal mission on.” Well, isn’t it obvious?

While he was elected to serve the people of Vermont, in reality, he is serving as a tool of powerful Canadian energy conglomerates whose plans go far beyond acquiring Vermont power companies, transmission towers and ridge lines. Recall that Entergy also owns the Indian Point complex just north of NYC, with reactors similar in age and design to VY, which furnish electricity to literally millions of residential and commercial customers.

Once VY closes, the next target will be Indian Point. When that’s shut down, guess who will be waiting, contracts in hand, with so-called “green” power from Hydro-Quebec? The only thing missing are the transmission lines to required to transport the electricity from Canada to southern New England and New York, cutting right through the state of Vermont.

And, as we know from his own comments, the governor has started paving the way for that. Sheffield and Lowell are sideshows; it won’t be long before the Canadian corporations and their agents, Gov. Shumlin and the PSB, will use various forms of pressure and coercion, (legal and otherwise), including eminent domain, to force us off or devalue our land. All Vermonters are, in effect, the Nelsons.

PS: I, personally, am an opponent of nuclear power and am not in favor of renewing VY’s license to operate.
