Clifton residents file appeal against wind project

Some residents of Clifton have filed an appeal against a wind project that town leaders have approved.

The project calls for building five turbines on Pisgah Mountain, which is south of Route 9 in Clifton.

The developer is Paul Fuller of Bangor who has been pursuing the project over the last two years. He says he and his wife have invested thousands of dollars in wind studies which concluded that the wind on Pisgah Mountain would be strong enough to provide power to thousands of Maine homes.

Yet Peter and Julie Beckford say the noise from the turbines would be easily heard on their nearby farm where they grow perennial flowers. The couple has now filed an appeal with the town to revoke the project’s permit.

“At a beautiful time of year doing beautiful work that we love, we’re gonna be hearing these turbines,” Peter Beckford said Thursday.

“We have met all the noise ordinances. We’ve met all the setback requirements,” remarked Fuller, “Their house is approximately 5,000 feet away from the turbines. Where you’ve seen a lot of trouble with turbines have been where homes are 800…900… 1,000 feet from the turbines. Not 5,000 which is almost a mile away.”

The Beckford’s appeal is now in the hand of Clifton’s board of appeals.

As for Paul Fuller, he says that he hopes to have a foundation laid for the turbines by the end of the year.
