Big Wind requires big research

Erie Times-News, www.goerie.com 7 November 2011

I am writing in response to your editorial “Let’s all learn more about wind farms” (Erie Times-News, Oct. 19). First, they are not wind “farms” but huge 50-story high industrial wind turbines with reinforced concrete bases from 30 to 50 feet deep holding them up.

However, they do resemble the corporate agribusiness in the subsidies given and the fertilizer spread around. But, for now, I just want to provide some informational sources that the public can access to counter the misinformation provided by self-serving wind developers, mostly from Texas, federal and state agencies, and from a few of our local politicians.

Excellent website sources are: National Wind Watch; Wind-Action; Wind Concerns Ontario; Dr. Nina Pierpont, M.D.; Great Lakes Wind Truth; and Save Our Allegheny Ridges.

For example, to learn what the Pennsylvania Game Commission is doing in its dealings with the wind industry, go to the NWW and access the July 16, 2011, article in the Lancaster newspaper.

The free movie “Windfall,” shown at Blasco Library on Sunday, provided citizens with a more balanced view of Big Wind.
