Teachers take lessons in wind turbines

Students can now build their own model wind turbine thanks to training undertaken by their teachers during the mid-term break.
Science, maths and geography teachers from counties Cork, Clare, Dublin, Kerry, Kildare and Wicklow have spent a day at the Gneeves windfarm near Millstreet as part of the week-long course.
The KidWind training programme in Cork is run by Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The institute has its own on-campus wind turbine and an international reputation for its renewable energy focus.
The course is supported by Bord Gáis Energy and the Irish Wind Energy Association.
It will allow teachers give lessons about the concepts behind turbine systems and the impact on wildlife and economics.
Each of the teachers will bring away a wind turbine model building kit.
This can be built in class as a demonstration tool for students.
The aim of the project is to educate young people on the importance and value of wind energy in Ireland.
Around 150 windfarms in 26 counties, in the Republic and in the North, provided enough electricity for around 750,000 homes last year.
