Villagers fight plan for wind turbine

Campaigners fighting plans to put a wind turbine on a chicken farm beside the A14 at Hemingford said they expected to have 700 signatures on a petition opposing the plan by today.

They are also campaigning against a plan to install LPG tanks at the chicken farm at the St Ives junction.

Esther Harrod said: “I think by Thursday we will have 700 signatures.

“It is just a snapshot of the village because we haven’t had a lot of chance to get around.”

Mrs Harrod said the wind turbine would be 253ft tall, around a third bigger than Nelson’s column.

She said: “With the wind turbine we don’t like the height and it would be extremely distracting to the A14 and fires are one of the biggest problems with wind turbines which could be dangerous with the LPG.”

Mrs Harrod said there was an application to build 18 storage tanks containing 37 tonnes of LPG at the site.

She said many local people had been unaware of the turbine plan which the parish council had approved because there did not appear to be any opposition at the time.

Plans have previously been approved for a new chicken farm at the site which had been a chicken farm in the past.

Mrs Harrod said the new farm was high intensity and substantially bigger than the original.
