Wind park substation OK’d

Consumers Energy’s special land use application for a substation and permanent lay-down area off of Pere Marquette Highway in Summit Township was approved with some conditions Tuesday by the Mason County Planning Commission.

Among conditions approved by the planning commission are a bond of $238,000 for the decommissioning of the substation and a $50,000 bond for planting and maintaining landscaping at the site. An additional condition was the purchase of additional, neighboring property to be combined with the property on the original site plan for the substation and lay-down area.

The substation and lay-down area would be used to service the company’s Lake Winds Energy Park, a wind farm consisting of 56 476-foot-tall wind turbines in Riverton and Summit townships. The proposed substation and lay-down area would be located on Pere Marquette Highway in Summit Township.

Once the conditions are met a special land use permit can be issued.

3 of 4 site access roads approved

Three of four requests from Consumers Energy for access road changes were granted by the planning commission Tuesday night.

Planners didn’t vote on a fourth request, to move the access road to turbine 28 – located off of Hawley Road on the east side of the project – saying they would revisit the issue at a later date.
