Show the reports

Recently Saskatoon’s council approved the construction of a $5-million Saskatoon wind turbine on top of the landfill. On its website, the City of Saskatoon makes reference to “four feasibility and assessment reports” with respect to the turbine. These studies analyze the noise created, the soil conditions for construction, wind speed and impact on birds and bats. There is no “report” listed on the economics of the project. In its conclusion, the report on wind speed states that “The site, therefore, . . . Complete story »

TVA renewable energy changes prompt ‘grid parity’ debate

A recently approved makeover of TVA’s renewable energy program is aimed at developing green power while keeping prices down for its customers, officials with the public utility say. Industry observers, however, believe the federal power provider may be painting lipstick on a pig. Among the measures approved by TVA’s board at its recent quarterly meeting is to transition the Generation Partners pilot program to permanent status under the new name Green Power Providers. The program particularly targets development of small . . . Complete story »

Belle Creek moves forward with appeal in wind case

At a specially scheduled meeting Monday night, the Belle Creek Town Board voted to appeal the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission’s decision to allow a 78-megawatt wind farm in Goodhue County. Citizens stuffed themselves into available chairs and crowded in the back of the Belle Creek Town Hall to voice their opinions prior to the board’s vote. Many of them encouraged board members to appeal, explaining their concerns surrounding wind turbines in the area. Rochester resident Mary Hartman has been studying . . . Complete story »

Portland wants to set limits on wind power to keep turbines out of the skyline

PORTLAND, Maine – Maine’s largest city is considering an ordinance to regulate – but not ban – wind power there. A wind energy ordinance in Portland could be the first in a number of new rules considered as city officials eye setting guidelines for other burgeoning technologies not currently covered in the code books. Many smaller Maine communities are considering moratoriums on wind power due to concerns about the environmental, economic and health impacts of the large spinning turbines. The council is due . . . State Senate President talks politics with local leaders

Multiple residents and organizational leaders advocated Murray to abandoned wind siting reform legislation, which critics have said removes local control by streamlining the permitting process. One person even called for a moratorium on all wind turbines. Murray, who represents the Plymouth and Barnstable district, said her area has seen "bad" wind projects and does not support the bill. Her viewpoint is contrary to Downing, a wind-power advocate who is the chairman of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. While he has not formally endorsed the current draft of the bill, Downing has led the committee in multiple public hearings and believes the bill can be written in a way that allows some local control. While Murray does not support the bill, she does believe there is a place for wind power in the state's future energy plan. Complete story »

Private member’s bill would give municipalities control over turbines

TORONTO – Conservative MPPs are taking advantage of a Liberal minority government to introduce private members bills. Member Todd Smith, from Prince Edward Hastings, planned to introduce a bill on Dec. 1 entitled the Local Municipality Democracy Act, 2011. It is aimed at restoring municipal power to draft and enforce bylaws to protect local interests with regard to green energy projects such as wind turbines. Wind turbine opponents say when the Green Energy Act was introduced in 2009, it ran . . . Complete story »

Tell the truth about wind farms

“Hands up for a cleaner, greener future” (Cairns Post, Wednesday, November 23) was as misleading as the promises offered to the local residents by the Mt Emerald Wind Farm developers. Having been told personally after asking many times, what benefit was this to the locals; I was informed that this development will offer more secure power during a cyclone. Obviously the developers have not experienced a cyclone. 1. Wind turbines must be shut down during a cyclone. 2. They need . . . Complete story »

The big guys don’t follow same rules

I would like to make a few comments regarding Bob Burkett’s letter to the editor published in the Nov. 10 edition of the Olean Times Herald (“Landowners Have Right to Make Their Own Decisions”). Mr. Burkett, we may live in America, but if you think we have a right to do what we want with our own property just read the zoning laws for the town of Allegany. I can tell you, from very negative first-hand experience, that you do . . . Complete story »
