Donald Trump says windfarms are ‘bad for Scotland’

Donald Trump was quizzed in an exclusive interview on Scotland Tonight’s first programme.

In an interview with presenter John MacKay from Trump Towers in New York, he said proposed turbines near his golf course near Aberdeen were “monsters” and “bad for Scotland”.

A planning application for an 11-turbine windfarm off Aberdeen Bay has been submitted to Marine Scotland.

The billionaire businessman has written to First Minister Alex Salmond objecting to the proposals which would be visible from his luxury golf course at the Menie Estate.

Asked by Mr MacKay if he would pull out of the golf course project if the windfarm goes ahead, Mr Trump said: “Well we’ll see what happens.”

“We are building a very, very important place for Scotland,” he said.

“When you look at these towers they are ugly and they are very, very depressing to be looking at.

“Frankly it’s a bad thing for Scotland. You have one of the greatest coastlines anywhere in the world and to put these really atrocious-looking structures up in the water I think will be really detrimental to Scotland.

“I think they could find another location which could be more appropriate.”

The tycoon told STV Tonight he had been assured by former First Minister Jack McConnell that the wind turbines would not be built within proximity of his golf course.

The planned turbines would be built one mile away and visible to golfers enjoying the course.

Mr Trump is worried about the impact of the turbines on the environment and local wildlife.

He said: “Thousands and thousands of birds will be killed by these big fans.

“The birds fly right through them and they get killed. They lay underneath by their thousands.

“Frankly the energy is not very efficient, which is a problem because when you need the wind isn’t blowing.”
