Anger at plans for two wind turbines

Evening Telegraph, www.northantset.co.uk 20 October 2011

A campaign has been launched against new plans to build wind turbines 233ft (71m) tall.

The application to erect two 250KW turbines and ancillary buildings in a field off Hinwick Road, Wollaston, was submitted to Wellingborough Council at the end of September and since then opposition to the plans has been mounting.

Campaigners are planning to voice their anger at a Wollaston Parish Council meeting this evening and a later public meeting.

Penny Haynes from the Say No to Wollaston Wind Farm campaign, said: “They will make a huge visual impact on the whole of Wollaston, Farndish and other local villages.

“They will also significantly affect all users of the Green Lane – walkers, horse riders, cyclists etc, as they are right next to the Green Lane. The noise they generate is very loud.

“We, the public, are paying for these ill-conceived schemes through our fuel bills. It is only the farmers and landowners across the country who are profiting from the massive subsidies being offered. While they earn huge profits up to £60,000 per turbine, the rest of us suffer the impact of these wind farms, which are desecrating our countryside.

“This is just the thin end of the wedge. If we allow two turbines to be put up, more will almost certainly follow.”

Jonathan Alms, of Shepherds Hill in Wollaston, is one of dozens of residents who has supported the campaign.

He said: “Although the campaign only started three weeks ago we have had a lot of support, we have had a talk from UKIP MEP Derek Clark and support from MP Peter Bone.

“We have been advised to start a petition which we have done and we already have 85 signatures.”

Mr Clark, who has backed the campaign, said: “I am totally against building two gigantic wind turbines right on the edge of Wollaston looking over unspoilt Northamptonshire countryside.

“These turbines will provide practically no electricity to the National Grid.”
