MP backs campaigners

Anti-windfarm protesters have enlisted the support of Bridlington MP Greg Knight in their fight against turbines in the region.

The No to Wolds Wind Farm Group met with Mr Knight at his Driffield office last week, and requested his support for their campaign to have the Yorkshire Wolds designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – hopefully protecting the area from future innappropriate development.

David Hinde, of the group, said: “We have asked for Mr Knight’s help and we have been encouraged by what he has said.

“The Wolds has been made famous as a beautiful and unaltered landscape, and this is it’s major selling point for tourists and visitors, so we hope that Mr Knight can bring these details up with central government.”

Mr Knight told the Free Press: “I think the Wolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty and I support the No to Wolds Wind Farm Group – the Wolds is at risk of being desecrated by having too many wind farms.

“The East Riding has done more than it’s fair share with renewable energy and now I think that enough is enough.”

Mr Knight said that while plans are with local councils, campaigners should direct their objections to the local authority but pledged to make representations to the Government Minister about further developments in East Yorkshire.

The No to Wolds Wind Farm Group also handed over a copy of a Freedom of Information request to Mr Knight, which hopes to find out details of all of the discussions wind turbine companies have had over sites on the Wolds.

Mr Hinde continued: “We are asking for information to see applications that have been received but not verified, those which have been approved and those which have been refused and not taken any further.

“We have already had some success in our campaigning as we have seen applications withdrawn at Buckton Barn and at a site near Grindale – as well as an amendment to the application at Willy Howe Farm.”
