Wind, water on tap for Peru

PERU- The town selectmen will be holding a public hearing on October 27 in the Dirigo Elementary School gymnasium at 6 p.m. to discuss adopting the Industrial Wind Energy Facility Moratorium Ordinance and to see if the town will authorize selectmen to take money from surplus to drill a new well for the town office.

Selectmen have been informed of a forthcoming building permit to erect a test tower on Black Mountain in Peru and currently have no ordinance in place to protect the town. The moratorium will allow the Wind Ordinance Committee time to further their work study without having to initiate an emergency moratorium or act on a building permit without a moratorium in place.

The town is also looking to get approval from citizens to take up to $7,000 from the surplus account to drill a new well for the town office. The estimated balance in surplus is $407,949.

“It’s bad business to commit funds this early in the year,” noted Chairman Tim Holland. “But, we need to get a well drilled and separate this building from the old school regardless of what happens to that building.”

Also up for discussion will be the fate of the former elementary school. The Friends of Peru Elementary School are asking the town to enter into a lease agreement in order to create a community center at no cost to taxpayers, while another group is looking to tear down the facility, thus, costing the town thousands of dollars in demolition fees.
