County to vote on wind-farm pact

DANVILLE – A resolution before the Vermilion County Board will prepare the county for initial work on its first wind farm.

Members will vote at the board’s monthly meeting Tuesday on a resolution authorizing County Board Chairman Jim McMahon and county highway engineer Doug Staske to execute a road agreement reached with Invenergy Wind LLC.

The road agreement was among the final hurdles for the first wind farm project to earn permit approval from the county board. In addition to executing the agreement, the resolution before the county board will give McMahon and Staske authority to negotiate and modify any additional details that arise.

McMahon – calling the resolution the “final step” – said that, with the resolution approval on Tuesday, Invenergy representatives are prepared to begin work on the wind farm as early as Oct. 17.

Vermilion County received a check on June 10 for $104,000 as an application fee from Invenergy Wind LLC to construct 104 wind turbines as part of the company’s California Ridge Wind Energy Project. According to the application filed by the company, the California Ridge wind project starts along County Road 2150N just north of Newtown in Pilot Township and stretches north and west to just across the line into Compromise and Ogden townships in Champaign County.

The project consists of as many as 134 wind turbines, 104 of which will be in Vermilion County.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board will approve $45,000 in state funding received by the Vermilion County Health Department for active and inactive landfill sites.

The funds – one of 19 issued recently by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency – also will go toward the health department investigating citizen complaints about illegal dumping in the county.

FYI

The Vermilion County Board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the courthouse annex.
