Turbine bid blown out

Sunderland Echo, www.sunderlandecho.com 5 October 2011

A proposal to build a wind turbine on the outskirts of a village have been turned down after objections from residents.

BT put in plans for the structure in a field on Pesspool Lane, Easington Village, after revising its original scheme to build three.

Now Durham County Council’s county planning committee has rejected the application after hearing the majority of people in the area were against the turbine.

The parish council said the plan would have had an impact on listed buildings including St Mary’s Church and Seaton Holme and its conservation area and would have set a precedent for more developments.

Planners also received 19 letters of objection.

Officers told the committee the county has exceeded its target for wind farms.

BT had said it proposed a sympathetic and viable scheme and the turbine would help the company meet its target for reducing its carbon footprint.
