Issue is wind on Lenox Mountain

www.berkshireeagle.com 2 October 2011

Lenox Town Manager Greg Federspiel’s attempt in a letter Wednesday to correct his ill-advised statements in the previous Sunday’s Eagle only compounds his problem.

Mr. Federspiel now concedes that Lenox may, in fact, “decide to say no to wind energy.” However, “wind energy” is not the issue the Lenox Board of Selectmen decided to address. Quite properly, Selectman David Roche suggested that the board set up an advisory committee to focus on whether “wind turbines on Lenox Mountain” is a good idea for the town. That motion passed 4-0 with one abstention.

Mr. Federspiel’s second effort in The Eagle to frame the discussion on “wind energy” again puts him in conflict with the much more limited scope of the board’s decision and echoes the mantra of the pro-wind lobby (“If you are against wind, you are against alternate sources of energy.”)

I would hope Mr. Federspiel now understands that Lenox is not addressing whether wind energy is good for the U.S. or even for Lenox. The town is going to focus on whether wind turbines on Lenox Mountain will be good for Lenox and its neighbors. And I would suggest the answer to that question is a resounding, “No.”
