Paxman’s people tell the nation about Winwick

The current affairs programme Newsnight has put the national spotlight on the tiny hamlet of Winwick as the debate about plans for a wind farm rages on.

The BBC was out and about filming for an edition of the show which was broadcast on Wednesday last week.

The programme was looking at the new localism bill, which was designed to give local people more power, but critics have argued it will give developers more control.

The hamlet, near West Haddon, has 70 residents.

It is currently fighting a planning application by the energy firm E.On for a wind farm made up of seven turbines.

Interviewed as part of the piece was the leader of Daventry District Council, Cllr Chris Millar and the town’s MP Chris Heaton-Harris alongside Winwick residents Sue and Trevor Sherman.

Mrs Sherman said: “Our David and Goliath struggle against E.ON has definitely hit a national nerve.

“Many people are watching what happens in Winwick with tremendous interest.”

The application for the 126.5 metre turbines is due to be determined following a planning inquiry.
