Gardaí are investigating an attack at the family home of Roscommon mayor Eugene Murphy, during which white crosses and posters with abusive slogans were erected, apparently in relation to the controversial issue of wind farms in the county.
Absenting himself from this week’s council meeting when councillors discussed the proposed wind energy strategy for Roscommon, Mr Murphy said his home had been targeted the night before and he had to put his family first.
Coillte has applied for planning permission to build 20 wind turbines, 130 metres high, on Sliabh Bán, Roscommon’s highest mountain, while Galatech has applied for permission to build 16 wind turbines in Dysart, south Roscommon.
Both proposals have sparked considerable local opposition.
