11-page letter lists objections to pylon plans

Campaigners fighting plans which could see hundreds of pylons built across Shropshire and Mid Wales have written an 11-page objection response to Government officials.

The Shropshire and Mid Wales Alliance, which has been formed to stop hundreds of wind turbines, pylons and a substation being built, said it had written a detailed response to the Welsh Assembly’s environment and sustainability committee.

National Grid wants to put up a 400,000-volt electricity line to feed electricity generated from windfarms being built in Mid Wales into the National Grid main line, which runs north to south through Shropshire.

Pylons could be built to carry the line, although National Grid has stated no decision has been made about whether it will go above or below ground. A 19-acre substation could also be built in Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion, and Abermule, near Newtown.

This month it was revealed that more than 6,000 responses had been submitted to National Grid, leading the firm to delay a decision on the proposals until the winter because it had so much correspondence to deal with.

Alison Davies, a spokeswoman for the alliance, said the letter had been sent on behalf of various campaign groups.

She said: “Some of the objections include the possible health risks these proposals would have. Other factors included the value and vulnerability of the areas likely to be affected by developments.”
