Atac walks against wind farm

Lynn News, www.lynnnews.co.uk 24 September 2011

Campaigners fighting against plans to build a windfarm near their homes held a sponsored walk.

People in Syderstone need to raise more than £10,000 to pay for legal representation at a public inquiry next year.

Electricity company Eon is appealing against a decision by the borough council to refuse planning permission for five 100m turbines on farmland in Chiplow.

Protest group Atac, Against Turbines at Chiplow, organised a 4.5 mile sponsored walk around the site on Sunday.

Villagers armed with placards were joined by horses at the start of the walk at Syderstone Common.

About 20 people took part in the walk with 30 more showing support on the day.

Committee member Richard Griffiths, of Rudham Road, Syderstone, was pleased with the walk but said that sponsorship was still being collected.

He said: “It was a very successful walk.

“They (Eon) have so much in the way of financial resources to finance an appeal against a borough council decision.

“But for any group of people who are fighting against it, it is a huge amount of money to raise in order to combat a big company.

“We are a very small community and not a wealthy community.”

A total of 77 per cent of the village voted against the plan in a parish poll held three years ago.

Eon says the wind farm would create enough electricity to supply 5, 000 homes.
